Phoenix, Rio Salado - YRE 0423
Walk on trails along the Salt River just south of downtown Phoenix. This area was once a dumping ground for industrial businesses. In 2005 the US Army Corps of Engineers removed tons of trash and planted thousands of trees to change it into an amazing 600-acre nature area. Recycled rebar is fashioned into park benches and art forms. The lush riparian corridor uses a combination of paved and dirt/rocky trails. More than 200 species of birds have been spotted here by bird watchers. The habitat ranges from wetland ponds to mesquite bosque to cottonwood/willow forest. Participants walking with dogs will walk a shortened route as dogs are allowed only on paved paths. 5k, 10k - Rated 1A
